A Demon Sleeps In My Bed
79A few months ago, I braved my life when bringing home a small demon. She was so small, near fragile behind the ice blue eyes. I deemed her M.I.A.
Her sharp fangs never pierced my skin, as I had been warned they would. At even a young age with a lifetime ahead of her, the public already deemed her a murderer like her brothers before her.
That night, and for several nights in a row, I placed her in her bed, with pillows, dolls, and blankets. The demon wasn't having that. Wailing and screeching at the top her lungs in the middle of the night was horrifying. Once cuddled in the bed, she was fine.
Now, risking my life, letting this demon sleep in my bed, with me! That is brave... She could bite. Gnaw. Attack. Kill.
After months of letting the demon monster sleep in my bed, my fears have grown. I now fear the God awful, horrendous smell of her gas. The kicking. The unbelievable loud snoring. The pillow snatching. And the overall bed hogging that this demon child has succumbed me.
But, I go to bed every night with my demon's good night kisses, and I wake up every morning to my monster's good morning kisses. Her gotty lines fear me not, as I will not have her any less. My monster. My demon. My daughter child. Is nothing less than a full-blooded, pedigree, also known as the American pit bull terrier.
I wouldn't have her any other way, than a demon sleeping in my bed.
Temperament of the APBT
The standard for all American pit bull terriers is that they carry the qualities of strength, confidence, and the zest for life.
And, with their goofy smile and determined face, these dogs truly have the best of personalities. Despite what the media protests. This breed is loyal till death; they fight to protect their pet parent even if it means their demise.
Pit veteran APBTs, have been appointed heroes for saving the lives of both children and elderly, and everything in-between.
As with any dog, of any breed, socialization is must, and with the proper human and animal socialization the APBT can be the most affectionate of family pets.
Like most terrier breeds, the APBT is known to carry the dog aggression quality, but again, that is a trait of terriers, not just the American pit bull terrier. And, on the other hand, human aggression is a trait that is far from the breed's characteristic. Even far into their deep, infamous history of dog fighting, human aggression was strongly frowned upon the fighting pit dogs.
The breed is very affectionate, as they will attack you with their kisses. They are eager to please their pet parent.
These dogs are both courageous and intelligent. They constantly surprise their pet parents with new and goofy tricks. They catch on quickly to training, whereas many terrier breeds are slower learners. Their immense want to please, their food obsession, and athletic builds, make them great candidates for obedience and agility competitions.
But, of course, no breed is perfect, not even the American pit bull terrier. We all know that one. This breed is definitely known for it's stubbornness and adamant appeals. A strong, firm hand is needed when dealing with this breed as with most bully breeds. Even with their eagerness to please, these dogs must realize that they are not the dominant party in command, but you, the human, are. As with any breed, if the leader is not established, the dog will step up to the plate. And, with such a strong, adamant breed, you surely do not want to have the roles confused.
Demons and Children
One day, my demon child took a trip. Her fist trip besides the two hour ride home. She rode an hour out to see a few children, ages 2 and 4. She'd never seen anything like it.
Children smell different than adults. They act different. They sound different.
As soon as the littlest one walked up to her, she sniffed a brief second before charging. Full force. There was no stopping my demon child. It was on.
Her mouth wide open as she leapt towards the small child. Nothing could pull her off as she molested the poor child with demon kisses.
Hours later I pulled my tired demon away, as we drove the hour back home.
That night, like any other, a demon slept in my bed to rest.
Pit Bull Viciously Attacks Baby
Save America's Demons
Why is it that a breed, like all other breeds, with a past, like most other breeds, must be hated and scorned?
These dogs feel, like any other dog, and they love like any other dog.
They have a bad history, but so does many other breeds. Why do we discount their histories? Why do we ignore that two fighters in history, Crack and Floss, set out and murdered top, recognized pit fighters of their day. Crack and Floss were both Airedale Terriers, not fighting 'pit bulls.'
The Great Dane, today's gentle giant, one of the most mildest of breeds, once wore the same title of 'terror.' Malamutes, German shepherds, Dobermans, and Akitas, as well as Wolf-dog hybrids, Rottweilers, and Chow Chows, all have either held the title or currently still do. But, even still, they do not have near the evil reputation of the APBT, who was once a good old family dog, owned by presidents, celebrities, and plain down-to-earth people.

I love the way you write or at least wrote this article, i had to read this hub 3x it was so good. Thanks for your love for the breed. The way you describe your pit bull in your bed is unbelievable i wouldn't think others have the same experiences with me and my dogs in my bed. Great work im forever dedicated thank you
I love the breed and it saddens me so much to see any dog especially the apbt injured or abused... I foster apbts for a local rescue and they are the sweetest dogs... my current one is totally attached to my side... it disgusts me when someone goes off on how dangerous they are... my response is usually have u ever been bitten by one, have u owned one, and have u ever experienced having one in your life or any negative personal experiences with them... most people say no which makes me sooooooo mad cause they havent even thought to give the breed a chance which is wrong... thank you for all that protect and love this breed...
So true! I have a pit I just rescued from certain death at the pound, a chow/akita mix and a shorthaired pointer. Minus the shorthaired pointer, who gets a lot of negative responses based merely on how big he is, my other two dogs are supposed "monster/killer/terrors" also, and its so wrong, because all three of them are nothing more than lovable!! I dont understand why we blame the breed and not the owner! Thank you for sticking up for these innocent creatures that don't have a voice to stick up for themselves!
Wheren't they called nanny dogs once.
LOL, you forgot comforter stealing as well. My Pit has become quite the master at it !! The snoring is the worst, I sleep with ear plugs now.
My pit acts the same way. Extremly affectionate and likes to hog the bed :)
Seeing all the pit bulls in the pound saddens me greatly. The biggest problem is that often time the wrong kinds of people get these dogs and turn them into vicious animals that are "cool" and "tough". My mother loved the pitbull she had in her twenties, but described it as a Jack Russell with teeth. Such intelligent dogs, that just need the right love and training and a firm hand (like any terrier). There is nothing as satisfying as waking up next to a snuggly puppy:)
no i dont over bathe her at all! she is an inside dog so she rarely gets funky enough to bathe lol. i didnt know if the breed was more prone to skin irritations or if it is just outside allergins as with normal inside pets and not being accustomed to it. what food does your MIA chow on each day? Luna is my first puppy to raise so im glad to correspond with you!!
every time i take luna out to my parents house for a good run in the country with her bro/sis she has a little rash on her soft belly the next few days. any idea what she could have allergic reaction to? and any tips on how to comfort her besides oatmeal bath until it passes. i hate seeing my lil girl scratchin so much!
So cute to be a demon.
I saw a large Boxer running loose in my neighborhood the other night, but I could not get it to come to me. Did not appear sick or violent, just having too much fun running back and forth across a busy street. Then he ran away. I swear he was laughing.
i LOVE my APBT, her name is Luna and her nickname is the Monster- with a rhinestone collar of couse! i love this page, keep it up. i also feel as an advocate for this breed in MS. They are the most wonderful, patient, intelligent dogs i have ever been around
what about those vicious lashes from tail wagging furor, slobbery licky kisses all over your feet, face and hands, and those breaths of death when she smothers your face with her nose... plus, my Pup-Lick Relations assistant also sleeps on my head, I am her pillow, she thinks, and/or her bed, I am lucky to be able to sleep in her bed...
I've been keeping pits for years. My last baby, Zeus, Was born into my hands & died in my arms 12 years later. He went all over the country with me & was the perfect friend to my 2nd daughter when she was born. Zeus has been gone for over 5 years & it was time, so three weeks ago, I brought Sasha home. She was four weeks old at the time & has already become a member of the family. These are fantastic dogs & people need to be educated about them!
Thank you for sticking up for this innocent breed! We need more people like you.

I found this on someones facebook page. I laughed and cried at everything. I don't own a pit, but I would never think twice about owning one. Just because of their "history" or "bad rap" doesn't shy me away from them, because LETS FACE IT, 99.9% of what people THINK about pits aggressive tendencies AREN'T TRUE.
All the dogs my family has owned has been rescues. WE are what we make these animals, whatever they may be.
That last video killed me inside, honestly. The pictures from the beginning haunt me. It's disgusting to think that people find pleasure in watching dogs do that. Utterly disgusting. It is the 'owners' (in my eyes which they really aren't, since a real owner would never bring their babies to do that) that gave pit bulls that name. The people. And if people aren't going to read the true facts on a breed or animal of any sorts, and just shun them away with out any TRUE argument, then then should not be pet owners themselves.
I could go on forever, but what I mostly would like to say is THANK YOU. Truly an inspiring article.
