Dog GPS Tracking Devices
82Dog GPS
Having lost on dog within the past few years, having a dog GPS tracking system is something that I've been considering a lot lately. Because my dogs are my children, I want to make sure that they are as safe as I can possibly allow.
The dog GPS systems are a little bulky but have improved over the years. They allow you, the pet parent, to monitor your dog and if he's missing track him down with the global detection systems.
Currently, most dog GPS devices are bulky, so they may not be the best option for all dog sizes, but some versions do come in varied sizes. Below you will find the top dog tracking devices on Amazon.
Garmin Astro GPS Dog Tracking System
The Garmin Astro GPS Dog Tracking System is great for hunters and sportsmen who spend more time looking for their dog rather than the game. The device allows you to pinpoint your dog's position to show you exactly where he is.
You receive a tracking device for your dog's collar or neoprene harness and a handheld transmitter.
The color screen Astro handheld has all the same functions as Garmin's top-line handheld outdoor devices. You can use the barometric altimeter, area calculator, and check out celestial information. The microSD card slot is even available for you to check out maps, whether a detailed city street map or a rural area. You'll get over 6 million points of interest and exact turn-by-turn directions.
The Garmin Astro is built for rugged wear and tear, with an IPX7 waterproof exterior that you can immerse in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes. It even has a 3-axis compass that works no matter what angle you're holding the device.

The DC 20 device transmits your dog's position to your handheld system every five seconds to keep an updated current location. You can even see your dog's status- running, sitting, pointing, or treeing quarry. The Garmin Astro even sounds an alarm the instant the dog goes on point.
The Garmin Astro's high-sensitivity GPS receiver can track your dog's position even in the densest cover. It even lets you track up to 10 dogs at once in up to a five mile radius in open territory.
The Garmin Astro 220. The Astro also lets you save other important waypoints, such as Truck and Lodge, and choose special icons to represent food plots, tree stands and other hunting-related items.
RoamEO GPS Pet Location System
The RoamEO Pet Location System can track your dog with a 1 mile radius. This device is great for large yards and acres of run areas. Although, the collar isn't the best long-distance tracking device, it can alert you when your dog exists a specified "fence" that you've created.
The Receiver Collar is lightweight, durable, and waterproof.
You'll, also, receive a tracking unit that will display your dog's exact location on a 3.5 inch colr LCD screen. You get real-time updates
It's an easy device to use. Just turn it on and snap the collar around your dogs neck. Let him loose and watch his movements on the handheld device. You don't have to program anything.
You can purchase up to three collars for each tracking device, as just one RoamEO GPS system will track up to three dogs at once.
You can create a customized GPS Fence for each dog by walking the perimeter of your desired "fence" and committing the coordinates to the tracker's memory. When you dog leaves the specified perimeter, an alarm will alert you. You can create and change as many "fences" as you want, so when you take your dog to the park, you can create a new perimeter and store it for that location.
The RoamEO Pet includes rechargeable batteries for both the collar and tracking unit, as well as AC adapters to charge them.
The transmitter unit measures about 4.25 by 5.5 by 1.25 inches and weighs only 8.7 ounces.

You can track your dog's whereabouts at all times with the Global Pet Finder GPS tracking system. The entire package includes a GPS tracking device and a transmitter. The transmitter is lightweight, weighing about five ounces, and just slips onto your dog's collar or harness.

You can log into the Global Pet Finder website to build a virtual fence that will allow your dog to play inside that specified perimeter. The website uploads the perimeter to the device, which can hold up to 5 different fences at once.
If you dog wanders outside the fenced area, you'll be alerted immediately and will be sent updates of your dogs whereabouts. You can have the updates sent to your cell phone, PDA, or computer (via email or SMS).

There is a $34.99 one time activation fee, as well as a monthly plan that includes three locates (out of fence violation lasting more than 5 minutes) a month. The Global Pet Finder Website can provide you with more information about service plans.

i found alot of these helpful, i am still gonna do my research, im hoping to find an implanted microchip tht is gps locateable... i have 2 labs & i pitbull & i fear someone removing my pitbulls collar & harming her... & if shes chipped, id take my chances on cancer because in my heart i know it would be from me doing my best to protect her from something worse... byw, we rescued her from as 8 way intersection, some one discarded her & shes so special to us.
I hope some day that all people who own dogs could be allowed to have a tracking device. I lost my one and only friend Max he is a silky terrier and he is somewhere in Melbourne Florida. If i could have had a tracking device both me and him wouldnt be suffering right now. I wish i could be able to activate max`s chip. But just keep working on this technology it can save a dogs life one day.
Do you know if there are currently any microchips that have hand-held GPS units, like funride suggested? That would be ideal. My beagle has the "wander lust", as my husband says. She already wears a containment collar, and i don't want to put anything else on her collar, or add a harness. But I want to be able to grab a unit and track her down, as soon as I realize she has blown through the fence. She is quick and clever!
My puppy was just stolen 2 days ago and now I wish I knew about these devices sooner. :(
my dogs been missing since 12-16-08 shes a sweet little westie that never ran off we think shes been stolen she has a micro chip but wasnt wearing her collar if thier was a trackable micro chip we would have her home long ago please keep working to bring this type of technology to light for future pet owners so they wont suffer or thier dogs wont suffer being lost
We make the similiar Pet GPS Trackor.TK102 is a tracking device, which can keep track of your dog. TK102 can help prevent this from happening. It is light in weight and cannot be felt by the dog.Using GSM mobile technology once you've attached TK102, you can track the dog instantly via mobilephone or online. The moment it is applied you will receive information of the dog's whereabouts and for those with WAP enabled mobile phones, you can receive a link to a map showing the pets exact location. If you are interested in it,pls feel free to call me by 15989342437 or email me by jeff@xexun.com Our websites: www.xexun.com Http://xixun.en.alibaba.com
Great Idea! It's heart-breaking when you lose a pet. Nice review.
Ok, now I get the difference. I thought that microships were already traceable with some sort of gps equipment. Sorry for my ignorance on this subject.
Witney,
Thanks for the info. This is a great article with loads of information.
I am leary of the chips as mentioned in the comment above as I have heard that they can cause cancer at the site (who knows). They haven't been around long enough to tell. I prefer the tracking device you suggested.

Great hub. I guess most people also fears having their dog stolen and in those cases this devices probably won´t take you to your dog :/ . I heard that some pet owners also uses an under skin small chip which allows to find the animal even when he has been stolen. Do you think this is also a good solution?
Hi Whitney,
I was only joking, I can see the benefits of this, particularly with younger dogs who like to go off exploring on their own from time to time. Waiting for them to turn can be a worrying time.
As usual a very great hub Whitney. Lucky for me my dogs aren't runners.
regards Zsuzsy
That's pretty cool!--Luckily I have a dog that doesn't wander, but I could have used this with the previous one I had. I wish they could somehow incorporate this feature into the micro-chip so the dog doesn't have to wear the tracking part...they probably will be able to one day.
Yeah great review, but for the price I think Ill stick to whistling ;-)
These are great devices - super review!

Is there any update on the development of a micro chip that has a GPS. I know lots of pet owners that would gladly support this type of device, myself included. Our pet is micro chipped but was taken from our yard 13 days ago. He have done everything we can think of to locate him. If only that micro chip was trackable with a GPS I would have him back in my lap. We miss him sooooo much :(
