"Designer Breeds"
Goldendoodles are one of the new designer breeds that are on the market today. Now, personally, I'm not a big fan of the designer breeds, as in many cases people will purchase purebred Golden Retrievers and Poodles and breed them, calling the puppies Goldendoodles. But, this is not the case, as you will not get an even ratio of dogs that have the same characteristics. The results from this breeding will be of some pups appearing more golden retriever, and the rest appearing more poodle. In the scenario, this breeding did not result in the desired designer breed result. It resulted in a mix-breed litter.
BUT, I will say that with proper breeding, a true Goldendoodle can be produced. In order to produce a true goldendoodle, the breeder will have to begin with a golden retriever and a poodle, choose the top picks in the litter. Breed that top choices to another, unrelated golden retriever/poodle mix. And continue doing so until a dog with the general characteristics of both the golden retriever and the poodle are existent.
And, through selective breeding a proper goldendoodle can be produced. As well as a Miniature Goldendoodle, which is produced by breeding golden retrievers to miniature poodles.
The Goldendoodle
The goldendoodle was bred to produce a large breed dog that has low shedding characteristic for those who are allergic to dogs. But, you do need to consider whether you are allergic to dog fur or dog dander. As even the goldendoodle will have dander.
Appearance:
A true goldendoodle is hard to describe, as they are a hybrid, mix-breed. A standard goldendoodle will range from 20 to 24 inches in height and 45 to 85 pounds, whereas a miniature goldendoodle will range from 13 to 21 inches tall and 25 to 45 pounds.
Temperament:
The goldendoodle is a loving, loyal dog. With the mixture of breeds that created the hybrid, the dog is naturally social and easily trained, but this, by no means excuses lack of training and socialization on the owner's part.
Health:
Since this is a mix breed dog, the health concerns of both the golden retriever and the poodle are taken into account. Both breeds are prone to hip dysplasia and cataracts, as well as other inheritable health concerns.
Health of a designer breed dog can a concern in general. You will need to watch and find a reputable breeder. Many petstores who sell designer breed pups, purchase the puppies from Puppy Mills, which can result in very unhealthy puppies who will become dogs with severe health concerns.

They breed large numbers of puppies from a limited number of adult breeder dogs. The females are never given a proper break to relax and heal their bodies. - Prisoner of Greed
There are health concerns associated with puppy mills. You WILL encounter overbreeding, inbreeding, little to no veterinary care, poor quality food and shelter, no socialization, and over crowded cages. Unwanted dogs are euthanized without a chance.
Goldendoodle Breeders
Finding a reputable breeder will be most important in finding a puppy with limited behavioral concerns and health issues. Puppy mills are a great place to pick up a puppy who will eventually suffer genetic illness and behavioral issues... If that's what you're looking for...
You may have to pay more at a breeder, but you will be guaranteed a healthy puppy.
Now to find a breeder in your area, or a breeder who will ship you a puppy... The search begins...
NOTE: When searching for a reputable breeder of goldendoodles or miniature goldendoodles, you may want to understand the classification that they will assign their litters. Some breeders claim that they have first generation (F1) breeding, which means that the pairing was of a purebred poodle and golden retriever. Sometimes, you will see F1- back cross or F1-B, which means that the litter was the result of a goldendoodle and a poodle or a goldendoodle and a golden retriever.
Many breeders will ship their puppies. In most cases, you will have to inquire about shipping. And, yes, it is safe to ship a puppy. Puppies and dogs are shipped in regular plastic dog crates. The crate must be large enough for the puppy or dog to turn around in comfortably, but no larger. They are shipped via planes overnight to you your airport, where you will pick up the pup.
Remember to ask to see verification for proper testing when trying to pick a reputable goldenddoodle breeder. Goldendoodle adults should have the various tests such as :
- Hips (HD) OFA or Pennhip or OVC
- Eyes (CERF) Required Yearly
- Hearts tested and certified by OFA
- Elbows (OFA) on all new certifications.
- Von Willebrands (vWd) (bleeding disorder) DNA or Blood screen
- Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) (Skin Disorder) minimum of 2 tests within a 3 year period.
These tests are those that are normal for reputable golden retriever and poodle breeders. They are great when ruling out health concerns that the puppies can inherit.

Whitney,I know this was written a number of years ago, but after recently getting a goldendoodle and seeing your comments telling people to just go to the pound to get a mix if you want a mix - I think its just rude and untrue! if you go back and look at the history of purebred dogs, where did they come from? Many of them were intentional cross-breeds ... a designer dog of their day if you will? What is a goldendoodle? An intentional cross-breed to get a desired result. Thank you. 'nuff said. Some of us want a mix breed that has the benefits of a poodle and retrieve, the lower chance of problems from a mix breed, and from a reputable breeder, enabling us to look at the history of the parents so we can estimate the chance of genetic disease or other problems carried through. Just going to the pound to get any old mix breed dog is not the same, you shouldn't be so ignorant to truly think it is.
I have a golden doodle and she loves attention more than anything--even food. She's a sweetheart.

We have a 20 month old miniature goldendoodle(35 lbs) whi is a joy and delight. He is first generation from a breeder who took us to the kennel and introduced us to his mon.(Dad, a miniature poodle, had gone home.) Milo goes to the office with us and is great friends with neighbors and really anyone he meets. He's friendly with other dogs.
He looks like a teddy bear, little lion, or lamb--depending on his grooming schedule.
He does not shed at all, is wonderfully mellow, intelligent and well-behaved. (House-broken at 10 wks)
We bought him in Cincinnati and would highly recommend the breeder.
We have an amazing Goldendoodle! I spent a lot of time researching them before we decided to take the leap and purchase one. We ended up finding a litter advertised in our local paper as F1's in a nearby town. We were so excited and rushed to see them. It ended up being nothing more than a puppy mill. The puppies were filthy, no parents on site etc. We were about to leave when we spotted the scrawniest puppy sitting in the corner shaking. As soon as we looked into her eyes, we knew we had to take her or she would surely die there. There wasn't an ounce of fat on her, poor thing. Anyway, after a visit to the vet and treatments for parasites, serious ear infection and a good cleaning, she has grown into the most incredible dog anyone could ask for. Healthy as a horse, extremely loveable and loyal, smart as a whip and always eager to please. Goldendoodles are everything you hear and more. I have friends that have "purebreds, registered" from the best breeders and her intelligence puts them to shame. If anyone is looking for a loyal and loving family pet, this is definately the breed. Great with kids and pets and not an agressive bone in their body. The perfect family dog!

We have a mini Goldendoodle and she is the cutest thing. She has a great temperment and even better personality. I have had may dogs and she is one of the best by far. We got her from a breeder in PA named Berlinview Kennels.

I have a cockapoo (cocker spaniel, poodle mix), and it actually looks really similar to a goldendoodle, now that I have seen one, except she's appears as though the smaller more petite version.
I don't know what kind of breeders they are at goldendoodle world but they without a doubt have the most informative website if you are wondering about anything to do with the hybrid. It's not even close

You are correct, rdeinc. A reputable dog breeder would allow potential customers to visit the property and see first hand what it looks like and see for themselves the conditions the dogs are living in. Anyone who refuses this is hiding something. I can understand a breeder who doesn't want viruses and diseases spread to the new pups but when a breeder refuses to allow anyone to step foot on their property to even see the property, the dog kennels or anything, I say it's a huge red flag.
Also, how much effort does it take for a breeder to post some photos on their website of their property, the kennels, the whelping areas, the breeding pair or pairs?
This is suspicious especially when the website already has photos sent to the breeder posted on it. This to me doesn't make any sense.
If I were a reputable dog breeder or any kind of breeder, I would want everyone to see photos of my property and the inside of the kennels. I would post videos of the puppies interacting with the other dogs and people.
To keep this kind of information off of a dog breeding business website is in my opinion, suspicious.
We love our Goldendoodle boy. Barley is amazing. However, you want to do your homework first! If you choose a good breeder you should be able to go on the property and look at your choice of puppy at 6 wks. of age no sooner. The breeder should also be willing to show you mom and dad of pups. I don't think there is such thing as a non-allergenic dog. Barley does not shed!His dad is std poodle and mom gld retriever. He has SOME curl. The tighter the curl the less shedding they have. Temperment: AWESOME! Dedicated family dog, even temperment, and very loving!He is corky and funny. Be smart on your breeder and ASK questions then listen carefully to their answers. Don't rush your decision just for the sake of wanting a goldendoodle! Goldendoodles will change looks as they get older, so look at pics. There fur needs more care then what most articles say. He has had many hair cuts and only 1 yr. old, so keep that in mind for it can get expensive. They love water and they are very smart. Enjoy and be a GREAT dog owner!! (training is a must)
We have two Goldendoodles,boy and girl 3yrs old, they are litter mates. Bought from a Puppy Mill. One has VERY bad hip Displaysia. Please dont go this route, buy from a good breeder. We love our dogs but is soo sad to see our baby in pain.
I agree with lindarogers about Goldendoodle World. All one has to do is look at their messy website to see what kind of people these so-called "breeders" are. The Gerrish's are considered to be back yard breeders and they are NOT reputable by any stretch of the imagination. No reputable breeder would first of all, have such an awful website with no photos of the kennels, whelping areas, dog runs, etc.
Goldendoodle World has been asked repeatedly to show photos of their kennels but they refuse. All the photos you see on their website are of people at their own homes and NOT on the Gerrish's property. These back yard breeders live in a trailer park and have a small piece of property that is cluttered with junk. They are also animal hoarders and need to find homes for a great number of these animals. Their 'kennel' is nothing more than a metal shed behind their trailer full of dogs crammed together. Sure, they ship puppies all over the world and do you know why? Because they don't want you to see what's behind that privacy fence. If you want to meet the Gerrish's and get your new puppy, you will have to meet them in town. You will never get to see where your new puppy was born nor will you get to see the parents. Just try and 'wade' through all the junk on their website.
Two years ago the Gerrish's surrendered ten adult goldendoodle dogs to the animal shelter because the dogs didn't sell as puppies. Instead of spaying and neutering the rest, they continued breeding and selling puppies. This is unethical and outrageous. They may not be a mill but they certainly aren't professional dog breeders.
If anyone wants a doodle dog, all you have to do is go to your local SPCA or a doodle rescue and get one for a fraction of the cost. Anyone who spends hundreds or thousands of dollars on a mixed breed 'designer' dog deserves to have their pockets emptied by people like the Gerrish's. Wake up people. Adopt a homeless dog.

Under "Goldendoodle Breeders" the listing you have for "Goldendoodleworld" -- for your information (and this can be confirmed if you write me privately) this breeder is known as THE WORST GOLDENDOODLE PUPPY MILL IN THE UNITED STATES. Records from buyers of this person's puppies are many, for very sick puppies that died within days of receipt, other major complaints.
They are beautiful. I may consider getting one quite a while after my elderly dog passes on.
Check out a shelter, and you'll find the same thing. Breeders breed pure-bred dogs, not mixes.

I have a goldendoodle puppy (7mo old). He is great. Very little shedding. My special needs son is very allergic to most dogs and he has done wonderful with him. He was very easy to train and is great with my 3 kids. We got him from a breeder in michigan. Very happy with our decision to get him!
My Aunt has one and it is a great dog.
it's a poodle mix. poodle are low shed dogs. but, some goldendoodles will shed if they have more of the goldie genes, though, as goldies are pretty good shedders. it's just a mix, so it's hard to tell how much it'll shed

I wouldn't pay the money for a pups who had been purposely bred from related dogs. Most people who breed hybrid dogs are bad about this. You can actually do a search on petfinder.com for goldenretriever poodle mixes and more than likely find a dog to adopt.
We found two beautiful Goldendoodle 13 week old pups. Unfortunately, we found out that they are the offspring of a mother and a son. We had them checked out as thoroughly as can be at a vet but we are still very worried that we are inheriting a life long series of problems. Any thoughts. (Beside the fact that the breeders should be shut down!
I don't know anything about that breeder, but they made a poor choice spending the money on the dog which probably shows more of one breed than the other. Most "breeders" of this mix breed dog are not producing a litter with uniform looking puppies. The first and closest "breeder" of lab/poodle mixes and golden retriever/poodle mixes is not going to be found in the U.S. but Australia. For the most part anything bred in the U.S. is not going to be considered a breed by any means. They definitely wasted their money, and like you said could have gone to a shelter and gotten the same thing for a better purpose.
I know a family that purchased a goldendoodle from Diamond Doodles. I was really sad that they chose to do so reather than go to a shelter, but what's done is done...can you tell me what you know about that particular breeder? I was so afraid it would turn out to be a puppy mill.
One of the problems with goldendoodles is they are sometimes inbred to produce the greatest appearance,but not health.
goldendoodles are great. I love them... in my experience they've combined the best of poodles and golden retrievers which are both great dogs. Great hub!

You need to make sure that the breeder does proper health tests on all adults and puppies (if applicable). You should ask for references, such as the breeder's vet and past clients. There are other questions you can ask, but it's a little harder since it's a mix breed the breeder is breeding.
There really isn't a reputable breeder of REAL goldendoodles, unless you go to Australia. There are some that have first and second generation, which usually carry traits of either Golden Retriever or Poodle, with a little of the other.

I have yet to find a reputable "goldendoodle breeder." I think that you should mention more in your hub about the dangers of puppy mills and backyard breeders. You only skim the surface. Maybe a link to another resource?

Goldendoodles are NOT non-allergenic, as said in the article, unless it is a generation after generation bred goldendoodle. Otherwise you will get a golden retreiver, poodle mix, with characteristics of both, usually one more than the other. Yes, they are very expensive if you purchase them from a reputable breeder. Because it is more a mix breed dog than a purebred dog- as the AKC will not accept any poodle hybrid, such as the goldendoodle, you can findthem at animals shelters if you look hard enough, and the fee will be an adoption fee, which is usually much less than purchasing the same mix breed from a "breeder."

I have 2 beautiful Goldendoodles. I am "in love". They are the best, most beautiful, well behaved dogs (babies) in the world.
