List of Dogs That Do Not Shed- Low Shed Dogs

There is not such thing as a dog that does not shed and will never shed. All dogs will shed at least a little bit at some time during the year. The difference is that some dogs shed very little hair, which can be very beneficial for those with dog allergies. Just remember that people who are allergic to dogs are not allergic to the dog hair, but the dog dander which is essentially flakes of skin, and all dogs have dog dander. So keep in mind that people with dog allergies may not be allergic to all dogs whether they are low shed or not.

I have actually spoken to a man who raises and breeds American Pit Bull Terriers. He has several APBTs, but of all of the dogs, only one of the dogs does not affect his allergies. So, you can't specify one breed or the other, as in this case he raises all the same breed, and only one is able to live in the house, since it doesn't affect his allergies towards dogs.

As for non-shedding dogs though, you will find that in most cases, their coats aren't always going to be the easiest to care for. Consider the Bichon Frise, Yorkie, and Maltese, all of which require daily grooming even though they are low shed dogs. Poodles and poodle mixes, which are the most popular "hypo-allergenic dog," require a good deal of grooming as well. In many cases, it's not uncommon for at least two trips to the groomers a month, costing $30 to $100 or more.

When you're looking for a low shedding dog, you'll want to keep in mind that most dogs with wire, curly, or stiff hair tend to shed less and require less grooming. Dogs with multi-layered coasts, require more grooming, and fine haired dogs require even more grooming. Even if you bring home a non-shedding dog, remember that you will still find loose dog hairs on the floor or in the carpet at different times of the year- such as spring/early summer and during winter.

Again, keep in mind that if you are allergic to dogs, you can not always rely on "hypo-allergenic" dog breeds," as the allergies stem from dog dander not dog hair. Dogs that are low shedding dogs are a great place to start, though.

As you can see the list above is not just pure-bred dogs. Generally, if you have a mix breed that is of a low shed dog breed, you'll encounter the possibility of a low shed dog.

My suggestion is that you check out shelters and available dogs and just spend a little time with the ones that you like. Not all dogs will react with your allergies the same, and you may be surprised as to which dog breeds may not affect your dog allergies, and like I said before, even dogs of the same breed may affect your allergies the differently, so don't discount a dog just because of its breed. You really never know what dog will or won't affect your allergies.

Be open minded to change, but at the same time keep in mind the above list of low shed dog breeds when looking for a dog, especially if you or someone in your family has an allergy to dogs. Just always remember just because a dog may not affect your allergies, you should still consider whether or not the dog fits into your lifestyle.

A hyperactive dog that doesn't cause you to sneeze, break out in hives, have breathing problems, or affect your allergies in any way, shape, or form, just may not be the best dog for your low-key family. Keep in mind the dog's temperament, your training abilities, other dog owning factors, and of course how the dog affects you, must all come into play when choosing the right dog for your family.
