True Blood Books - Sookie Stackhouse Series Book Review
85True Blood Book Set
True Blood Book Series
The vampires are now allowed to mingle with humans with the advancement of True Blood, a complete diet created by Japanese vampires to keep vampires alive without having to feed on humans. And, since they're legal now, they're now out in the open...
Charlaine Harris has written this entertaining vampire series about a semi- naive, Sookie Stackhouse, and her undead boyfriend, Vampire Bill. Harris uses a little of just about every book genre in making her stories pop to the punch. You'll find that surprisingly enough, a human-undead relationship has, oddly enough, similar problems as a human-human relationship.
You'll find romance, mystery, action, adventure, and humor, all packed into these novels. Each novel in the Sookie Stackhouse book series has its own flare that keeps your reading.
I've found that Harris' books are hard to put down. I finished book 1 in one day, book 2 in a few nights, and book three in about two and a half days. I gave up my nightly television shows in order to read this captivating fiction series. And at times, I found myself wondering, what would I do in Sookie's shoes- dating a vampire and all seems dangerous but according to Sookie it has its perks.
I've included a mini summaries from each of the books in the series below; although my brief summaries aren't able to capture even half of the main highlights. You'll have to read the books in order to find out the rest.
I've also included links to purchase the books individually, if you already have one or two of the books, otherwise, you'll even find the link to the full True Blood series so you can purchase the books all at once.
Dead Until Dark (Book 1)
Here Sookie Stackhouse is introduced as the town nut. She's misunderstood and looking for first vampire. When Vampire Bill strolls into town and into Merlotte's Bar, she's ecstatic.
Personally, I was expecting the run- of- the- mill vampire story, but Charlaine Harris is able to turn the undead vampire into a sexy, mysterious man, who believe it or not is actually welcomed by Sookie's grandmother, since Bill is the first boyfriend she's ever had.
Get to know Sookie, her coworkers, boss, grandmother, brother, new vampire boyfriend, and her new vampire acquaintances.
But as you get to know everyone, try to figure out who the murderer is. There are two dead girls, each with vampire marks and a reputation of a wild sex life. The murders started after Vampire Bill moved in, but did he do it? Or did Sookie's brother with a similar, wild bedroom preference?
Is the murderer one of the undead or is it a living human? Will Sookie be the next to die? Of course not, I mean there's an entire series about her, but what really happens to her in this book?
Living Dead in Dallas (Book 2)
After making a deal with Eric, the vampire sheriff of Area 5, in book 1, Sookie has to use her gift to help out the vampires but just as long as no human is hurt. Well, Eric lent her out, and now she has to travel to Dallas as they've run into some trouble and are missing a brother
You'll find that with every religion there are fanatics, well the same goes with vampires. And, there are just some people who just aren't dealing with the new legality of the vampires amongst the human world.
Sookie Stackhouse must fight these fanatics, but she has to watch out because her Vampire and his elders just can't help her in every situation. And, when alone she has to fight for her life.
You'll meet new vampires in this book, but you'll be guaranteed that Vampire Bill will be there to take care of Sookie if anything goes wrong. And, of course Eric has to pop in and help out and make sure everything goes smooth, but he also hopes for some chance in Sookie's pants.
Club Dead (Book 3)
Well, there's another trip in it for Sookie. This time she's traveling to Mississippi with a werewolf, not Bill, yet she travels home with Eric...
There's a good bit of adventure in "Club Dead," with a nice mix of shapeshifters, werewolves, and vampires. And, who would have thought Sookie would run into Tara in a supernatural club with another vampire.
Basically, the gist being Bill's in big trouble, and he's missing. Eric sends Sookie in search to find out any information she can so they can save him without starting a vampire war.
But, in the mean time, Sookie has to pretend to be the were's girlfriend, battle the ex, fight her own libido and her emotions, mingle with the supes, and still save Bill.
With Bill's betrayel in her mind, Sookie can't wait to tear into him and hopefully Lorena, and tell you the truth, she does a great job holding herself up to the vamps and the other supes.
But, you won't believe what Bill tries on Sookie in the end after a week of sleep deprivation and starvation. And to think, she tried to save him... Well, it's not really his fault, he is one of the undead that is...
Dead to the World (Book 4)
Wow, so is there action in "Dead to the World."
You won't see much of Vampire Bill in the 4th book, but you will see a lot of Eric. On her way home from work, Sookie finds Eric runnig half naked down the road to find out that he lost his memory.
Sookie starts to fall for the new Eric, the Eric without an ego and without a whopping load of self-confidence- the confused and vulnerable Eric.
Well, here's were the action starts. Jason goes missing. A powerful witch coven is in Shreveport. Fangtasia gets attacked. The witch leaders try to break into Bill's house. The vampires, werewolves, and local witches get together and fight the new witch clan.
It's a fast paced book, that is one I doubt you'll be able to put down.
Oh, and Alcide abjures Debbie from the eyes of the weres, as Bill explains how she took part in his torture in Mississippi and how she tried to kill Sookie. Maybe Alcide understands the woman Debbie is. I'm still hoping to see Sookie and Alcide get together, as she and Eric have already made that connection. ;-)
Dead as a Doornail (Book 5)
This wasn't one of my favorite Sookie Stackhouse books, but it was entertaining enough. Basically, there's someone out there killing shifters, and Jason is again in the hot seat, as the were-panthers of Hotshot believe that he is the killer, being made a were-panther not of his own free will.
The police, just aren't sure who the killer may be, as they just can't seem to pinpoint any similarities in those who have been shot.
In the meantime, Sam gets shot, andĀ asks Sookie to ask Eric for a favor. He wants a vampire bartender while hes not able to bartend. Eric agrees and sends his new pirate vampire to Merlotte's.
Even with all of this going on, Sookie's house gets burned down, and Alcide asks Sookie to go to the werewolf events of choosing a new packmaster, as Colonel Flood has died. The events just don't go as expected, but Sookie meets another shifter who's emceeing the event- Quinn, is a tall bald tiger.
Definitely Dead (Book 6)
In Book 6, "Definitely Dead," Sookie travels to New Orleans to recover the possessions of her cousin Hadley, who recently became dead again. (She was a vampire who was truly killed.) But, before her trip, she goes out on a date with Quinn, and after the show, they get ambushed by two young bitten weres... Someone is out to get Sookie.
After a long night, Quinn takes Sookie home, and a few days later Mr. Catalaides and his niece show up at Sookie's home to take her to New Orleans.
They wait until nightfall and invite Bill along, as he previously mentioned how he'd like to go. Once in New Orleans, Sookie finds a body hidden in the closet.. Oh boy...
As the book progresses, Sookie and Quinn get abducted by weres, and we find out who's been trying to get her.
The Queen asks for Sookies assistance, as Hadley was once her lover, and all Hell breaks loose at the Queen's party. The king starts a war...
We also find out secrets about Bill, and of course Eric is there to ruin another secret that Bill needs to be the one to ease to Sookie. The secret is enough to send Bill packing, as she never wants to see him again and never wants him patrolling her yard again. (Personally, I find this could be a bad thing, but that's just me.)
All Together Dead (Book 7)
Sookie must go to the vampire summit to help out the Queen, reading the minds of all the humans in the crowd. Sounds simple, until little mishaps start happening around the hotel.
Arkansas vampires turn up dead, a bomb is found outside the Queen's room, a trial witness is murdered by a vampire throwing arrows. The waters start to avoid Sookie and Barry, and Jake is acting funny...
Is there a Fellowship operation about to go down?
The seventh book in the series is pretty intense, and it's up to Sookie to figure out what's going on.
But things get complicated when Barry and Sookie figure out the big mystery in the book. They must save the vampires and the humans at the hotel, but in doing so, they must use their combined telepathy to find the living humans.
After the big event, everyone goes home, and Sookie must catch up with Amelia and Tara. There's a short and simple ending to all the action; I'm not sure if it was on purpose of if Harris just ran out of time to fully develope the ending.

thank you! i can't wait, or i may have to read them myself.
i am addicted to she HBO show, thanks so much for the book series synopsis!
I Love the Way You Summarized up The Whole Series, I Also Agree that the BOOKS are Way Better than the Show and that the show is a little off when it comes to the books, for one the Red head Vampire that Bill turns in the show IS NOT IN THE BOOKS!!! which is Frustrating -_- cause it messed up parts of the book.
I Absolutely agree that the entire series is hard to put down just like the Anita Blake Series, it keeps you guessing and enjoying everything that happens in the books, which makes it harder to put down cause its so intriguing and also makes u think u wanna be in her story and dont want to be at the same time LOL
Are the books anything like the HBO series? I was thinking about reading them, but I wasn't a huge fan of the TV show. Any thoughts?
I love these books! I started out as Twilight fan and needed more vampires in my life. I also watch the television series, but in order to enjoy it I have to remove it from the books because the plot strays from the books A LOT.
wow didnt know they did books.
I'm confused. i thought Sookie and Eric date?
Hi! whitney your hub is very nice. I love vampires and of course that is True Blood.
does Sookie ends up with Bill in the last book? If not, that's is really bad......
I have not had the pleasure to read the books, but I do enjoy the television series on HBO! Steamy as I might add. Very good hub :)
I love vampire books, my favorite "Vampire Chronicles" by Anne Rice. Until Dark Death will be my next read.
Thanks for the book reports. I have books by the author mentioned I haven't read yet, but now I will find the time to read them. Again, thanks.
My girlfriend bought me the whole Sookie Stackhouse collection for Christmas just gone and I love it! I can't stop reading them and am on the 3rd book already. Its just one of those you can't put down.
I loved everything about the Sookie Stackhouse series. However, I was a bit disappointed after reading the ninth book. I was so eager to find out what finally happened with Sookie and Eric. To have the book end that way, it's just cruel. Maybe, there's another book in our near future? Here's to hoping.
I love this series and have read most of the books more than once now. Thank you for the hub
Thanks for the hub. Will reading the books mess up watching the show?

Well, this hub definately got my attention! I haven't read these books yet, but now after reading this hub, I will add these to my list of books to read! Great hub!
I am so glad I found his article! I haven't even heard of the series, can you believe that? It sounds so good though, so I'm definitely going to go order it in at the library!
I haven't read the books yet but saw the TV show and I was hooked.
It is finally nice to see something you loved turned into a show that you can see if your imagination created the characters and the scenes almost the same way.
I plan to read the book, heard a lot of mix reviews for her later series... (Some said her 5th or 6th book was rushed due to her new editor and the public demands)....
i love the show...had no clue it started as a book! i love it....have to check em out!
Love the Stackhouse series, and its great to see people take an interest in vampire stories that are not related to Twilight.
Sounds like fun. I haven't read a good vampire book since Anne Rice went off the deep edge.
Hey Whitney! Great hub! I'm actually a huge fan of Charlaine Harris, she's an amazing author and the fact that the show is following the books so well makes me ecstatic!
You forgot a one thing though! And if you don't know about them, check them out. Charlaine Harris participates in a lot of anothologies. Here's a few, anthology name first, then her story.
BITE - "One Word Answer"
POWER DETECTION - "Fairy Dust"
UNUSUAL SUSPECTS - "Lucky"
WOLFSBANE AND MISTLETOE - "Gift Wrap"
MANY BLOODY RETURNS - "Dracula Nite"
NIGHTS EDGE - THIS IS A NOVELLA!!!
check them out! Make sure you read them in order though, otherwise you'll spoil it all up if you haven't read the entire Sookie story.
A very enthralling article. After reading this article, I now want to purchase all of these Charlene Harris books and do further reading. I thoroughly enjoyed the review of this book series.
Why do I suddenly vant to drink your blood?? Just kidding. Awesome hub. :)
