Dachshund
72Black and Tan Daschund
History of Dachshund
Dachshunds are an older breed of dog that has become very popular in modern society. Whether you prefer the short hair Dachshund, long hair, or wire coated Dachshund, their personalities date back to the 1700s when the dogs were being bred for rodent extermination.
Some people think that the breed dates back to Ancient Egypt because of carvings depicting short-legged hunting dogs. But, as for modern day, the Dachshund can be considered a European creation by breeding various German, French, and English hounds and terriers.
Dachshunds have been kept by royal courts all over Europe, to include Queen Victoria.
The first verifiable references to the dachshund, originally named the "Tachs Kriecher" or "Tachs Krieger," came from books written in the early 1700s.
Prior to that, references that refer to a "badger dog" and "hole dog", could be considered references to the Daschund, but it could also refer to purposes of a dog versus the breeds.
The breed is famous for its use in exterminating badgers and badger-baiting, dachshunds were also commonly used for rabbit and fox hunting, as well. Sometimes, they were used in packs in order to locate wounded deer while hunting.

Dachshund Temperament
Dachshunds are playful and fun dogs to have and be around.
They are known to chase small animals, birds, lizards, and tennis balls, which can be attributed their badger and rodent hunting past.
Dachshund are, also, known for their extensive digging problems, which can also be attributed to their roots, as well.
Many dachshunds are strong-willed or stubborn, making them a challenge to train, but with constant reinforcement and positive training, the breed is very trainable; you just want to make sure to have the correct tools for training, which includes your attitude.
Dachshunds are known for their devotion and loyalty to their owners and families. This love in addition to their loud bark, they make great watchdogs.
Some dachshunds are prone to separation anxiety and in order to relieve the stress, they may cause damage to within the house.
Daschunds can, also, be credited to being clever, lively, and courageous.
If raised improperly, withouth proper socialization and training, dachshunds can become aggressive or fearful. They require a caring owner that understands their need to have entertainment, exercise, and training.
The dachshund's temperament may vary greatly from dog to dog. Where some individuals will not like new people, others may immediately consider them a friend. Some Daschunds will be the average energetic dog, whereas some are laid back. Some may not be good with children, possibly biting an unfamiliar child, whereas. others do not know a stranger.
Becuase of this varied temperament, the Daschund may not be the dog for everyone.
The Dachshund Coat
Dachshund Appearance
Dachshunds come in three sizes. The standard dachshund averages 16 to 28 pounds, while the miniature dachshund typically weighs less than 11 pounds. The third, more rare daschund variety is the kaninchen, which weighs around 7-9 pounds.
Dachshund can have three different coats- the a smooth (short) coat, long coat, and the wire coat.
The breed has a wide variety of colors and patterns such as black and tan, merle, red, cream, blue, wild boar, chocolate brown, fawn, brindle, piebald, and any mix therein.

Dachshund Health
Dachshunds are known to have spinal problems, especially intervertebral disk disease (IVDD), due mostly because of their extremely long spinal column and short rib cage.
The risk of injury can be worsened by obesity, which places greater strain on the vertebrae.
In order to prevent injury, it is recommended that dachshunds not be allowed to jump or take stairs. But, some people say that taking stairs, can reduce the risk of IVDD because it allows the dog to walk and stay in shape.
Holding the dog properly is important to reduce the risk of injury. You should have the front and rear portions of the dog fully supported.
More recently, it seems that evidence has come up leaning towards the higher likelihood that the severity of spinal problems is largely hereditary. Responsible breeders are working to eliminate this characteristic in the breed, so before buying a Daschund, make sure to question the breeder about this in his dogs and their past.

Hi Whitney, I recently agreed to watch a 2 1/2 month old child and my year and a half old mini doxie is so jealous ! I has been just me and her since she was born. i live in an appartment building and everyone just loves her. She is an adoreable dog and i just don't know what to do! She tries to get to the baby and when i tell her no she acts like she wants to bite me. i pick her up and let her get as close to the baby as possible, but she just wants to lick the baby's mouth, which i cannot have. She is just soooo jealous,i know she is protective of me,she don't even want me to talk to the little thing without jumping, crying and being out of sorts. When baby is gone, she is back to normal. Can you give me some advice? I am at my wits end and I don't want to keep saying no ! I need help !

We walk a mile almost daily(considering the weather) She is so active in the house when playing, but that just don't seem like it is going to be enough exercise.Any info would be appriciated. I love this site ! I'd be lost without it !
My vet said to bring Molly in for a spring checkup. Does this mean that I start giving her heartworm pills? Does she get any other shots? She has been spayed and vaccinated for rabies. Thanks Whitney for the info. Your site is the only way to go ! ! !
How long do you leave your 1 year old mini doxie outside when winter in wisconsin comes? Do their feet get really cold? Should I be concerned about her ears, because they are very thin? This will be my first winter with Molly and I am concerned. I would like some info before the below weather sets in. Love this site ! ! Aneeda

Hi Whitney, My 10mo. old mini doxie is always whiney while in the car. This never happened till I dropped her off to get spayed and of course,we don't get to take them home that day. Since then she whines in her carseat constintly. I read once you can calm her down by giving her Benedryl. How much can I give her before we go on our long rides?
I just bought an 8 week old Long haired Daschund - its color is called chocolate based clear red (its eyes are blue) Its gorgeous. I will get it in 2 weeks. After reading some of these comments on aggresive behavior, biting, shedding, and destroying the house, I'm a bit nervous now. I also have a 2 year old cat, that is the boss of the house lol I was told it barely sheds, and I'm fussy in the house. How can I prevent it from destroying furniture? Is it ok to crate train, and leave it in the crate when no one is home?
Thanks for taking the time to give advice. I love this site!
I put a little 99%fat free chickin broth in her water and she loves it!Thanks for the tip.
She is almost 10 mo.and is shedding something terrible! Is this normal? I didn't know Doxie's shed.

I have 2 darlings, one is red the other is dapple. they are dedicated to one person, so true. but they are the most lovable kids I have ever had.
I have an 11mo old mini daschund who is wonderful, but she is very rough should we say on toys. We have a lab who cant destroy toys, that she finishes in less then 10 min. We have spent lots of money on toys that just dont hold up. Does anyone els have this problem or any suggestions? we have tried toys rated 8 on the 1-10 tuff scale it lasted less then 10 minutes!
thanks
My one and a half year old daschund bit a lady in the park on the leg for no reason yesterday and has started to try and bite people going past on their bikes. He has suddenly changed and I don't know why. I am worried he might bite one of the kids.
Hi! I just got a 7 month old male daschund. And the main issue we have with him is that when we go to pick him up or he gets excited, he pees. Will this go away with age or when neutered? Any info would be great.
I am 12 years old (almost 13!) I am thinking of getting a daschund but I an worried that It will not get along with our other 4 year old mediam sized mixed male dog.He is VERY territoleal and always barks at neighborhood dogs but gets along fine with fimilular dogs he knows. How well do daschunds get along with other dogs? Is there anythig I can do to prevent them from... IDK...fighting? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
Hoxies are fabilous dogs who are lovable, loyal and good sentries.
I just recently purchased a short hair black and tan daschund (Knox) and I got my room mate a black and tan long haired female daschund! (Mya) We love them! They are the best dogs!! The female was the only puppy of the litter, she acts kind of aggresive towards knox, (the male daschund) and was wondering if she will grow out of that?
i have two mini smooth coated sister dacshund named miya and daisy My dog miya is fat and in chocolate and tan with hair thats stands up on her neck.My other dog is skinny and choclate hair.
The light blonde colored Daschund that is mentioned by Kaci is more than likley and English Cream- while not common, they are out there, and beautiful.
Our 2 yr old female mini daschund shivers a lot! Any suggestions?
I took in an abused 2yr old mini short haired doxie about 4 wks ago. Everything was going well until I was playing with him and he twisted wrong and yelped. Now he is very timid and won't hardly come to me anymore. He looks at me like I'm an abuser and doesn't seem to realize that I would never hurt him. What can I do to get him past this.
Miriam
I was bought a daschund (named him ARMANI) from a woman who posted an add in the paper. he is 11 weeks old and so cute! wheni took him into the petstore to get puppyfood the lady in there said he was a blue _____ something or other. does anyone know what she was talking about?
he is black with grey spots and brown feet. the woman i purchased him from claimed he was a purebed pup but didnt have the papers to back it up so...
his parents were on site...Father:white with blue eyes and grey spots Mother: Brown.
I am just trying to figure out what she meant by blue_____\
and also.... any potty training tips would be great:) he is stubborn
Just located a puppy that is extremely light tan. The owner doesn't seem to have much experience and refers to this pup as red. This pup is not red at all and he is not like any tan I have ever seen because I do not see any black hairs. He's more bloned. Any one ever seen this before and what is the color classified as.
Hi, I have had several little doxies in the past 30 years and they all have a special place in my heart. I bought my daughter a puppy 4 years ago and she has the sweetest personality and just LOVES everyone and everything!! However I think she gets lonely when we leave because she tries to find tissues and tears them into micoscopic pieces. I am considering getting another puppy so that she would have company. I'm not sure she will like the idea because she is the BABY! I don't want her to feel she is being replaced and taking a second seat because of a new addition. My concern is that it might change her and add stress on her. Has anyone had experience with this that can give me some ideas. Our little girl has no domaince what so ever in her so and might get bullied by the new puppy when it grows up, so IF I were to get another puppy should I get a male of female?
hi. great page. i absolutly LOVE doxies my first pet was a red and he was great. now i have a doxie/chiuaha mix and i am worried about her ribs. there is a spot on her side where if you pet her wrong she wimpers. is this along with back problems a usual issue? i need to take her to the vet but have no income. should i be worried?
i have two daschund one male and one female they are twoo sweet
Poppy Kay, and all:I adopted my "Oscar" , a short hair Mini-almost eighteen years ago, was sure I was only a cat person until I saw his beautiful sweet eyes. He was about five mos. old, physicaly abused, wouldn't eat and was afraid of people. They put him in my arms, he peed on me and I was marked for life. He's happy, sassy, a cuddler, sleeps with me, and like most abused Doxies, needy of affection, and I adore him. I trained him to paper laid litter box, but take him for leisurlely walks so he can explore, and leave his signature. Older now, his almost perfect litter box training isn't that great any more, but he's more than worth the problem. I made a makeshipt arrangement for him to get up to the bed, and lift him now to the couch. He's everything you'd hope a Doxie to be, as well as a few traits you don't want.(Agrresive to other dogs, especially male. Thinks he's a VERY big dog) But loves people, especially children. Loves his toys, races after them but wont bring back, let's me know that they're HIS! and YES, dOXIES do SMILE...he does, when he's most happy. I wish you many happy years with your Oscar, and the same to all of you. Thanks Whitney 05, for this space.
i HAVE A PRETTY LITTLE fAWN FEMALE. wHY IS IT SO HARD TO FIND PHOTOS OF THE FAWN.S. iT TOOK ME FOR EVER TO FING OUT WHAT COLOR SHE WAS. vERY LITE CREAM WITH LIVER EYES AND NOSE AND LIPS.
HI,,,great website and excellent questions and answers about our wonderful little pets called Dacschunds!!! Thanks for the info and reinforcement on some issues I have with our little man named 'Louie'. Louie a short haired, red doxie and he will be 1 year old on Monday July 21 (tomorrow). Louie is a darling doggie with all of the same adorable characteristics of his breed. Loving, loyal, protective, LOUD and of course stubborn.
The reason for my post is that he has developed a flattened and outward-turned right foot. I e-mailed pictures to the breeder with an explanation and received a reply from her that she has never seen anything like that before and recommended that I take Louie to his veterinarian. I did that and the vet also was uncertain as to what is wrong and of course wants to do lots of work that is going to be very costly to me at this time. I am wondering if this is a congenital defect that the breeder is responsible for the costs that I am going to incur to diagnose and hopefully correct. I have a signed 5 year congenital defect guarantee from her and Louie is also registered with the Canadian Kennel Club, and i wonder if they or the American Kennel Club would have info on this condition that Louie has?
I hope that you are able to answer some of my questions and maybe give me some direction and support with this problem.
I have pictures of his foot if it is possible to attach to this site or to an email if necessary. THANKS!!!!
thanks for all this wounderful info on Daschunds I have one of my own. It helped alot because i had to do a project on it :) thanks
We have a daschund, her name is Eensie and she's almost 11 years old. I find that using a very stern voice when issuing a command works wonders. She's pretty obedient and quick to learn when she was a puppy. We are lucky that she's not greedy (as most dogs are) so she doesn't have a back problem. I make sure that she gets a walk every day if possible to make sure she's exercised and keep her back in order. When she was young we had a truck and my husband used to take her to work in the truck and she used to jump into it until she was about 8 and then we got rid of the truck. She still jumps into the car but has cataracts coming in both eyes so finds it a little more difficult to judge the distance! Daschunds are happy when their ears are in the "up" position. They also shiver when they're stressed.
your dog looks like my neighbor! lol!
I just got my first daschund a month ago. His name is Bodhi and I just love him to death. I hope to check back here and read the comments on training and socialization. Thanks!
dashhounds rock i have 1 and i love him alot
we have owned dashhounds for years. you are either a wennie lover or not. we also resuce dashounds. right now we only have the our two girls. Molly (the queen 7 yrs) and Lucea(our red baby 1 yr old) they do have back problems and gain weight easy . they have a mind of their own. but the personality ooh my cant bet it
I recently got a mini doxie puppy from a girl at work she bought him at a wal mart parking lot and he suffers from extreme separation anxiety from us and we have only had him a week The lady i got him from works night shift and her daughter in law kept him in a kennel all night where he barked constastly we dont have this problem with him but he sleeps with me and my hubby any tips on how to help him with this anxiety cause he destroys the house when i am gone. I also have a 6 yr old pug who stays in the house with him
i have a doxie i would like to know how to keep him exerzied other then walking he is very aggressive towards other pepole so i can't take him to dog parks
i rescued a dacshund a few months ago and he has been so great. my mom and i are his favorite. my brother is 4 and my dachshund has attempted to bite him. when we walk him he has problems with people and dogs. we are constantly having to tell people that they cant pet him because he might bite. and with other dogs it is also the same. no dog can get near him close enough to smell him without him snarling. it is making everything difficult for me and my mom to walk him because he is constantly trying to bite people who get near me or my mom and other dogs too. how do i stop this?
I have two Doxies..I love this breed !!! They love to cuddle and snuggle under the covers in your bed. They have a need to burrough, and covers seems to do the trick...nothing like a warm little butter-bean under the covers with you. If you use a doggie bed...give them a blanket to get under. Watch the weight...they have pleaading eyes and it is easy to "give in".
I just adopted a male doxie from my local animal shelter. His name is Oscar, and he is just the sweetest little thing you ever saw! He was abused by his previous owner, but there will be nothing but love and compassion at my place for him.
I think daschounds are very protective and loving.
We have one now, but we did have 2 before a house fire, and they were both very spoiled and protective. we miss them both and currently have another daschound. These dogs are very sweet.
Just because they are prone to having back problems doesn't mean they have to. Jist keep them on a strict diet and never feed them people food. I have two daschunds. One long-haired kaninchen, 3 1/2 yrs. and one smoothe standard, 17 1/2 years. Haven't had any health or back problems with either one. Although the older one is mostly deaf now. Other than that he's doing pretty good. I'm also looking at getting another kaninchen.
cute but not dashing as i thought it would but it is worth to have my
5th dog
Some people think that the breed dates back to Ancient Egypt because of carvings depicting short-legged hunting dogs. But, as for modern day, the Dachshund can be considered a European creation by breeding various German, French, and English hounds and terriers.
My dog encyclopedia believes your knowledge is 100% correct.
" The funerary monuements in Egypt are slightly different
from the Dachshunds. In Peru and Mexico there are Statuettes of dogs very closely resembling the Egyptian Statuettes.
An excellent hub thank you
Cute dogs!!!! We just got a daschund puppie!!! Its adorable!! Any owning tips??
Nice web page-Luz64
I have a miniature Daschund and want to breed it.... wold it be a bad idea to breed it with a standard Daschund? PLEASE HELP!!::)
Whitney,
This is a really well-done page. Plenty of good content, nice images.. I really like the way you laid the page out.
Whitney,
I love Daschunds, in fact I use to have one until she passed away.=/ I have a question, I was channel surfing and there was a dog show on and it was in the terrier group. Is there such a dog called the Sherman Terrier? I don't know if it was his name or ..? lol is it the name? any way they said that alfred hitchcock had it, if that helps. I just loved the look of it.please let me know. =]
Not to put words in anyone's mouth (namely Abhinaya), but many dachshunds have serious back issues. They have been bred (and inbred) for so long to have an elongated backbone, and many are bred improperly, which results in serious almost deformities. Even well-bred doxies have back problems, but lots of purebred pups have health problems.
Good hub, by the way.
Great article but a little worried about the health of these cute animals.
Thank you have forward your hub onto a friend, who is a lover of dogs
Beautiful writing job for a beautiful dog. Where do you get your photos!
I have a soft spot for the Dachshund. I used to doggy-walk a long haired little beauty named Hexie (meaning little witch). That was my first official job.
Great HUB Whitney as always

Hi, I just got a 2 yr old dashaund from some older people who could know longer care for her as they had 3 of them my son took one and I the other one. They are both females his seems so much more outgoing then my does. She seems very timid is there a reason for this? And is there anyway I can get her not to be so timid?
