Dog Breeding
If you decided to breed your dog, have you thought it out thoroughly? Have you considered what you will do with the puppies? Do you already have homes for them ready? Will you pay for their six week shots? Etc.
Responsible breeders have all this figured out.
With the rate of current litters there will never be enough homes for all the puppies and dogs, which is why millions of dogs every year euthanized, so if you make the decision to breed your dog, whether a "purebred" or not, make sure that you have thought of everything and made all the right decisions.
Irresponsible Breeding
Consider Spay and Neutering
You may want to consider having your dog altered before you consider breeding. As there are so many dogs, already, in animal shelters, you want to make sure that there are any more unwanted puppies that are put to sleep.
Plus, having you dog altered has health benefits.
Neutering male dogs reduces the risk of prostate cancer, while spaying females reduces the risk of uterine, ovarian, and breast cancer.
Altered dogs are more affectionate and less likely to bite.
Finding A Mate
If you must breed your dog, you will want to go about it the proper way, if you can call it that.
If you have a female dog and what to find a stud, you will want to go through the registry that your female is registered with, whether it be the AKC, UKC, CKC, or ADBA, and find a willing stud. You will usually have a stud fee to pay. Sometimes along with the stud fee, the stud's owner may want the top pick puppy. You will have to consider this as well.
If you have a male, and want to find a female, you will want to go through the registry that you male is registered, and place an ad for a stud dog. You can charge a fee to stud him out, but usually breeders will only pick studs that are champion. But, it's worth a try. You can set up an agreement to get a puppy, or two, if that's what you're after. For the most part, having a male, you will not get any money from the puppies, if that's what you're after (and, if that's the case, don't breed your dog!).
You can, also, post ads in your local paper and on internet classifieds.
Breeding Dogs
My personal opinion about breeding dogs is that if the dog does not have a champion bloodline, it should not be breed.
Champion bloodline, meaning titles in obedience, show, or agility.
The animals with champion bloodlines are those who will better the breed, versus cause more puppies to enter the world, with more owners who believe they should breed their dog, causing more puppies, and the cycle will continue.
This will do more harm than good to the breed.
But, at the same time, not all champion dogs need to be bred or are breeding quality dogs. Dogs that have one competitions, are those who are better of being bred, than dogs from champion lines who have not, and probably cannot, win a competition. (I say cannot because it really does take a special dog to win a competition with a hard working, patient owner.)

Their are billions and billions of humans in the world does that mean we should have our daughters uterus removed an sons testicled when their baby's? I don't think we have the right to decide that one person or animal has the right to breed and say another one shouldnt because their mother wasn't a movie star and their father wasnt the president
Very interesting and totally true! We have enough dogs in the world right now for every family in world to have atleast 2! So why breed? We need to find homes for the current babies out there!!
Also, if you "must" breed, I think it is a good idea to set a price on your puppies that is high, but with in reason. Why? Because most pets end up abandoned due to impulse buys. You can read about impulse buys in my Hub on Pet mills. No one is going to pay out a large sum of money on impulse which in turn can help reduce the number of abandonments!
Thank you Whitney and Heather. I hope you've convinced some of these people that the world does NOT need more dogs! Please, go to your local shelter and take home an animal. Millions of dogs are killed every year because they are unwanted. Don't add to the problem by letting your dog have puppies.
We let our pure bred spitz's have a litter bu. Neither have been shown. But they are registered, micro-chipped, had health checks, come from champion backrounds and the father if noth both will be shown this summer. We are doing this because we had interested people looking for one (they are rare in Irl). Both dogs have lovely temperment and as I already said come from champion backrounds and I do believe the one of our dogs grandfather & father were shiwn in the uk and u.s and won several titles! Our dogs have only been shown in local shows so far though. Would you call us irresponsible????

The owner of a dog with a champion lines and ribbons, will more than likely not breed with you, as it would ruin the bloodlines of the champion. Your dog is a mix, and doesn't have any steady bloodlines. There's no guarantee how the puppies would come out, and those who really train and compete with their dogs want guarantee, not possibility. They also breed for format, looks, and health, not just temperament, which isn't guaranteed with a mixed dog.
I have a beautiful dog whose name is Cali. She is an American Pit Bull Terrier mix that is very sweet, loving, quiet, and probably the most well behaved dog I've ever been around. Even the champion breeds I've been around act out compared to her.(not that they don't behave well) So if I want a litter that comes from her bloodline I should call her Chali and then it would be o.k. There are people who breed for the wrong reason, but just because my dog doesn't prance around a padded floor in front of some 90 year old judges to get a ribbon, (and I'm sure the dog really cares about the ribbon YOU received) doesn't mean she cant have amazing puppies. Stop breeding for money!!! But also stop telling me to not breed my dogs because you think they'll come out like mutants and they'll suck no matter what there bred with because there just not champions. My dog is a champion and I'm more than happy with her, so get over yourself and the champion kick that you came here with. Another question, If i breed my dog with a champion breed will it better her pups or will my Cali's bloodline ruin them all.

You're not bettering the breed by breeding mixes and dogs that aren't going to better the breed with exceptional appearance, health, intelligence, etc. Dogs from shelters- mixes and pure bred dogs- are not necessarily bad dogs, but they were bred by irresponsible people. I have mixes and I have had many in the past, so there's nothign wrong with it. I just believe that people who want to breed should only breed champion dogs with titles that will potentially better the breed, not for an experience. To get the experience is not a good enough reason to breed. I would suggest going ahead and making sure you ahve responsible homes before breeding. Your kids won't be missing out if you don't breed, and your dog won't be upset with you for not being bred.
I am looking for a male to breed with my very beautiful natured Maltese/Shitzu -Lulu. She is 2 years old and i am definate with reason to breed, purely for the experience for my 4 children and family to enjoy such a lovely part of life. When i was growingup i was lucky enough to have experienced lots of our families dogs have litters. I will never forget those wonderful moments of my childhood. It helped make me a very compassionate animal lover/ activist. I understand that there are plenty of homeless animals and why bring planned dogs into this sad/crazy world?
My Lulu has made such an impact on so many of my family and friends lives that if she had a litter of 10 pups i would still have plenty of people dissappointed as everyone wants one of Lulu's pups. I plan to pay for all vaccinations and vet bills until the the pups are wheanned.
Whitney, i really don't agree on your views regarding only purebreds should breed...... all of my dogs have been from shelters and mixed heinze varities, and given my family and have been such wonderful companions.
As long as they have a safe, loving home- i believe that i am and will be a very responable dog breeder. Like 2minpins, i am also in it for the love, enjoyment and experience for my children and my extended family who are big animal lovers.
I'm not sure I agree with your policy on only breeding champions and that you've failed to take into consideration a more personal, loving factor ... and my right to responsibly choose for myself.
I've bred my two registered Miniature Pinschers because I love these two dogs and I'm not interested in bringing an "external" breeder or rescue puppy into my pack if I have the option of doing it within my own group. I like the fact that the puppies are of the same flesh and blood as the parents ...
I have thought about this long and hard for the past 5 years until I was ready to spend the time rearing the puppies. I've been able to easily manage and restrict my two dogs breeding for 5 years without any "accidents".
Last fortnight my bitch gave birth to her first (and ONLY) planned litter of two puppies. The perfect number in my opinion and I was over the moon ... Until I was labelled a "Backyard Breeder" by registered breeders who immediately labelled me "unfit" simply because I wasn't registered. It was suggested I was irresponsible and that I should have purchased my puppy from a breeder.
I like Miniature Pinschers, but when I look at my two dogs and two new puppies I see them as family, friends and dependants ... Not as a animal that needs to be bred into "perfection" and if it's not worthy be desexed and sold off.
I'm certain that as a responsbile pet owner I can care and love my four individual dogs for their entire lives much better than some of the breeders I have seen who sell off their "imperfect" puppies to any idiot with a smile and $1000.
I'm not in it for money, or prestige and I don't care about having them club registered or breeding them publically ... I'm just in it for the love of my [pack] family.
It is irresponsible to breed him because you can't even guarantee that he's full blooded. You can't guarantee that he's from healthy genetics, and you can't guarantee he's of breed standards. All you can guarantee is that as of right now, he's hardy. You're being irresponsible by not neutering a dog that you rescued off the streets bc another irresponsible owner wasn't being responsible.
Isn't this obsession with "improving the breed" and only allowing a tiny group of inbred champions and their offspring to reproduce with each other the cause of the genetic disorders that plague purebreds? I found my dog on the street over two years ago, and he is a remarkably healthy black pomeranian with no physical issues but also no papers. Given his hardiness in what is typically a fragile breed, wouldn't it be irresponsible to not allow him to reproduce? Doesn't the obsession with papers and pedigree only hurt the breed in this case, while serving only the interests of those cloistered breeders who make money by studding or selling their dogs? And if he wants to make it with every Pug he sees, who am I to stand in the way of what is clearly nature's will?
The truth to the matter is if you don't show, work, or compete with your dogs you have no reason to breed, breeding should only be done to improve a breed/bloodline. Breeding dogs requires thorough knowledge of pedigrees, genetic disorders in the breed and how to avoid reproducing them. And how to do pedigree research, just to start with--- just because a dog has champion lines does not automatically make it breeding quality, breeding two champions does not guarantee that you will produce a champion or even breed quality dogs. Just because you have an intact dog male or female does not constitute breeding quality and breeding dogs that have not been proven in the ring or in the field is irresponsible plain and simple, people who breed dogs just because they can are doing the breed a major disservice, and have no business breeding or even owning an intact dog period……Its like building a house from the ground up and you don’t even know how to use a hammer.
It sounds like you are not experienced with this, so personally, it doesn't sound like you need to be breeding your dog. You do realize, you're going to have to pay a nice stud fee by studding out a dog, especially if you plan on getting a champion dog.
I was just wondering i have a miniature snauzer bitch and we are looking for a male for her to mate with next year, Do you no of any one personaly or through the internet that has a male with CB and is experienced with breeding. As i fear my dog may be a bit uneasy with the whole prosses.
She is trying to say that NO dogs should be purposely bred, and if the vast majority of dogs were spayed/neutered than the shelters would not need to KILL millions of dogs because no one adopted them because people decided that their dog needed to "unload" or "wanted babies". If only very few dogs were bred over a few generations, the numbers of unwanted dogs would decrease. Once the unwanted population has gone down and no dogs are left in shelters or put down, by all means breed your crossbred or mutt or whatever you would like, but until then, refrain and find homes for shelter animals.
Personally, no you shouldn't. If a dog doesn't have champion lines on both sides for nearly every generation, then no. There's no reason to breed a dog without want to truly better the breed.

I'm not saying just because a dog has champion bloodlines and a champion pedigree it should be bred. Like I mentioned in regards to health, it's all going to vary. I'm not saying that just because a dog has chamions in every generation it's going to be a good dog, either. I'm just saying the in order to truly do well by the breed, it's best to have well-rounded, healthy, well behaved, and champion dogs.
whitney i'm sorry but i do not agree with you on breeding. i personally beleive the tempermant of the dog is more important than whether or not he has won ribbons and awards in shows. I had a male Lhasa with CHAMPION BLOODLINES" and he was a nightmare! I had to have him put down after he attacked numerous people. I tried everything prior to this but nothing worked. he was in obdience classes and came first in his class and won many awards but he was a terror. If the dog has a good tempermant and fits the standards of the breed, why not breed the dog. champion bloodline or not?
I do agree that champion dogs are not 100% health proof, but they are for the better of the breed given that the sire and dam of each generation have been health tested with appropriate tests. I personally would never breed any dog, much less a mix breed because you can find them at the shelter for a minimum adoption fee so there's no reason to breed a mix breed dog. You're just increasing the pet overpopulation. Just because the dog is healthy and catched on to training doesn't mean that you should breed it.
I do agree that breeding should be regulated, and personally mix breed dogs should not be bred. That's just for pure money or "education/ experience" reasons, and that's not a good enough reason to me to breed a dog.
although i do agree that there are alot of terrible breeders and that this is undoubtedly one of the reasons for so many animals in rescue centers i do think that only breeding animals with champian bloodlines (mainly working trials based) would result in the possible decline of cross breeds which i think personally would be a sorry loss. Also i dont feel that breeding animals with these champian bloodlines neccesarily makes for responsible breeding either I own a pedigree standard poodle from champian lines he had to be withdrawn from training due to hereditary health problems, i also own a rescue standard poodle whose background i do not know who has done extremely well in obedience competitions, but the dog i own which has been most successful in obedience, agility, and pets as therapy is a bedlington terrier cross border collie which was abandoned in my local area. I plan on breeding her in the future but this is only because i have dog trainers interested in offspring from this dog, i would not breed my standard poodle who does have the lines, this example does serve to emphasise however that it is how the dog is raised and the knowlege of the owner which defines whether or not an animal is champian not in all cases the lines. A mongrel found in the street can surpass all expectations and i think it would be a shame to lose the variety of the dog world.
personally i feel breeding as a whole should be regulated and that the Breeding of dogs act 1973 should be enforced and further include private breeders rather than only larger breeding establishments.
No you should not breed your dog. Dogs don't want to have kids. Once they're spayed or neutered that's it. They don't want kids, they do it as a natural behavior. They don't know what they're doing; it's instinct to reproduce, but in today's society there are millions of unwanted dogs and millions who are euthanized because no one wants them, so there's no sense in letting them breed. Please spay your dog. You shouldn't have puppies from a mix breed dog.
I have a Chihuahua that is a mixed breed so that means I shouldn't breed her and get her spayed. To me it is just wrong to stop an animal from mating because how would you feel if someone spayed you and you knew that you wanted to have kids or you were mixed and that told you that you can't have kids because you are of a mixed background
Joseph, I am saying that people should not breed their dog unless they have champion bloodlines. There are so many good dogs that are in need of a home that there's no reason to breed any dog that doesn't have champions within the parent and grandparents of the pedigree.
I'm not the person to be telling that I don't care for dogs. If you only knew my experience with shelters and rescues, you wouldn't be saying that.
You took everything I said incorrectly and out of context. Please reread what Ive said. I've said that there are too many good dogs that need homes that there's no reason for anyone and everyone to breed their purebred dog just because they can and want too. I'm saying that unless your dog has CH or the grand champion marks next to at least one parent and preferrable the grandparents, then the dog does not need to be bred as the litter will not be better the breed characteristics and standards, but just bettering the owners wallet.

I have 2rescues, 1 stray, and a 2 from a breeder. Although, I would never breed either dog (they are both altered). The only reason I have the 2nd pup from the breeder is because I was turned down at a Pit Bull rescue because I already have 1 female dog and they will not adopt out a dog if you have the same sex already. I can tell you that I searched long and hard for a breeder of the APBT so that I knew I was getting a good puppy in regards to bloodlines and pedigree. I would not purchase any breed of dog from a backyard breeder as they tend to be in it for the money or experience.

Thanks 4 ur info and I do now what champion bloodlines means!my miniature schnauzers ansestors have won many awards in dog shows mainly 4 obedience and my dog is folowing in the same way and he has to won a numerouse number of medals and other awards. and I am breeding him to better the breed as that is something I feel is only right to do justice to the dog as it is always important to make room for improvement.
That's great your dog has champion bloodlines, I'd suggest find a female with champion lines. Hopefully, you're wanting to better the breed and not just make money. I assume the latter since you dont' care about whether the female has champion bloodlines. Either way, I'd suggest looking up AKC records for brood bitches available.
Also, I hope you understand the champion bloodlines mean that the dogs in his lineage have won ribbons in show, agility, obedience, etc.

You also don't have to have a purebred dog to have a good dog. There's no need to breed a dog unless it has good bloodlines. Otherwise, you're just trying to make a quick buck and you're not trying to better the breed. There's not sense in breeding if you're not trying to better the breed. Dogs with champion bloodlines have something to offer in terms of bettering the breed.
As I mentioned, you can get great purebred dogs and puppies at local animal rescues and breed specific rescues. You don't have to go to a dog breeder to get a purbred puppy. You don't have to spend $1000 on a champion puppy when all you want is a pet. You CAN find a purebreed puppy at local shelters and breed specific rescues and get the same thing but feel good about it because you rescued a dog versus buy a dog from a greedy backyard breeder.
I agre with adam u don't need a fancy dog with bloodlines 2 have a good pet not every 1 wants a dog with fancy backrounds 2 show them of at crufts or other main dog avents some people just want a companion a friend and i am one of those people and very much disergree with ur comments on breeding only champion dogs!!!!!!!!!!
Adam, I can say that only champion dogs should breed. Dog breeder claim to want to better the breed, and the only way to better the breed is to use dogs of champion bloodlines. Not all breeders sale these dogs for $1000. You just have to shop around. You can still get "cheap" purebred dogs at other places other than breeders. Try breed specific rescues and even your local humane society. or pound. Many purebred dogs get picked up and dropped off at rescues. You can get lucky in many cases and even get the papers if that's what you're worried about. You can find litters of purebreed pups at breed specific rescues, if you're looking for a puppy.

That is absolutely ridiculous. You cannot say only champion dogs should be bred. Perhaps that'll ensure you get to continue charging astronomical fees for your puppies, but there are those of us who genuinely want more puppies and honestly cannot afford to pay $1000/dog. We dont need or WANT your PRETENTIOUS champion bloodlines, we want a companion.
Really... Consider spay and neuter. If your dogs aren't of champion bloodlines and if they cannot win a title in the show ring, agility, or obedience ring, then you shouldn't breed the dog.

patterson- as mentioned above, if your dog doesn't descend from champion bloodlines, she doesn't need to be bred. Spay her.

Heck, I wish my folks had ME spayed when I was six months old. Would've saved me a lot of trouble. And, as you pointed out, there are health advatages. If you get your bitch spayed before her first heat, she has a 90% chance of never developing breast cancer.

I do not agree. Some people want dogs specifically for their breed. I bought a german shepherd, so i can have a smart protective dog. That is practically guaranteed with it's breed. If i were to go to a shelter and get a mix. It wouldn't guarantee anything. I love people who adopt but if your looking for something certain then... No champion bloodlines necessary. Just the breed. You don't need a champion to have a good dog. And non-akc dogs can be entered in ALOT of competitions to get a champion title. I just wouldn't breed because it changes the dog, and there could be several things to go wrong. I love my pup to much to risk it.
